For the first few reviews on this site, I tried using a 10 point rating system. I found that most books were getting 7 out of 10 stars. That’s about the average for all the books I’ve ever read.
Well, I don’t think that it accurately reflects how I want the book to be rated. So, we’re going to compress it down to a 5 point system. Here’s what the stars will mean:
1 star – This book will only be enjoyed by the mildly deranged or slightly illiterate crowd. Or perhaps just by normal people who aren’t at all like me. I, however, probably did not finish the book and found it abysmal.
2 star – This book was rather disappointing. I expected more out of it. If I did finished it, I now wish I had given up at page 100.
3 star – A solid book. I found parts of it entertaining, parts of it dull, and am not in the least upset that I read it. However, I won’t be reading it again anytime soon.
4 star – A very good book. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it. I heartily recommend it to anyone. I’ll most likely read it again some day.
5 star – An instant classic. One of the best books I’ve ever read. I’ll now read everything I can by this author, including this same book many more times over.
That should make things a bit more clear. At least until I start giving out half or quarter stars!
